Five Facts About The Eiffel Tower

  1. The Eiffel Tower was designed by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel and his company for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) in Paris. I
  2. It took two years, two months, and five days to complete the construction of the Eiffel Tower. It was constructed from 1887 to 1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.
  3. At 330 meters tall, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest man-made structure in the world until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York City in 1930. It remains the tallest structure in Paris.
  4. The Eiffel Tower is made of iron and weighs approximately 10,100 tonnes. It was constructed using more than 18,000 individual iron pieces, all of which were prefabricated and fitted together using 2.5 million rivets.
  5. Initially, there were four elevators installed in the Eiffel Tower, one in each leg. Today, there are three elevators in operation, which transport visitors to the different levels of the tower. These elevators are capable of carrying over 500 people per trip. Additionally, visitors can also climb the stairs to reach the first and second levels if they prefer.
