Having cruised on an AmaWaterways River Cruise along the Danube River the differences between ocean and river cruising were surprising. Of course there are obvious differences, however today I want to talk about what’s included in your river cruise fare, because people of ask us if AmaWaterways is all inclusive.
Despite being different it’s equally wonderful. Why? Because the unique cities that you reach by river boat mean that you can walk into glorious locations such as Vienna and Budapest.
Many River Cruises Work On A Full Board Basis, but on an AmaWaterways River Cruise full board covers A LOT. It’s difficult to feel hungry on The AmaMagna there are always snack available somewhere on the ship. Generally speaking the half board we experienced sailing with AmaWaterways felt very much like “almost” all inclusive.

I thought it may help to understand what’s included on an Ama River Cruise. Ama feels very much a premium product, however is well worth the price. Additionally it does help when considering booking a river cruise for the first time to know exactly what is included.
3 Meals A Day
Breakfast lunch and dinner are usually at set times, although there is more flexibility around breakfast and lunch. Dinner tends to start at a set time every day, this is dependent on port excursions.
Although dining is more intimate with less venues on a river cruise ship. The dining was outstanding on the AmaMagna, offering lots of diverse choice and quality, including child friendly meals for fussy eaters.
Snacks At Intervals Throughout The Day
No matter the time of day there are always cookies and snacks available at the Al Fresco Restaurant. Quite often local food and afternoon tea are provided too.
Sip And Sail Cocktail Hour
Sip and Sail Cocktail Hours takes place for an hour before dinner every evening. This is a great time to head to the lounge bar and meet fellow cruisers. But also a great time to take advantage of complimentary pre dinner drinks which consist of champagne, wine, beer and specially selected cocktails.
Wine And Beer With All Meals
Wine, champagne, beer, sparking and still water and soft drinks are served throughout meal times, your glass never goes empty. The service is exceptional you will never have to ask for a drink at mealtime.
Tea Coffee And Cakes
You will find a selection of tea and coffee available throughout the day, the main lounge has a coffee machine, fresh iced water and biscuits.
Cocktails On Deck
At intervals during the day one of the crew will appear with a nice cooling wine spritzer, cold beer or cocktail of the day.
Trips And Excursions On An AmaWaterways River Cruise
During our river cruise on the Danube nearly all of the excursions were free, with the exception of 1 or 2 speciality trips. Every day there was a huge choice of excursions.
Because of the nature of river cruising many of the tours are within walking distance. For trips that require transport, that was also provided. Also you leave the ship there is cold water available to take along with you.
Also for those with mobility issues, or indeed families with young children AmaWaterways offer gentle trips. These are sometimes in mini trains to save tired legs and also add a little adventure.
With the exception of a few, most of the trips are half a day and start and finish back at the ship. They run around lunch and breakfast schedules, thus allowing you to pop on board for a sport of lunch or indeed head in to town for lunch and some time exploring.
The great news is that you can do as many or little excursions are you want, dipping in and out of trips is a huge benefit.
Full Use Of The Gym And Classes
Ama offer a full itinerary of classes throughout the day, a gym with spinning bikes and the addition of a relaxation area. Also free use of bikes to take on shore.
WIFI Throughout Your AmaWaterways River Cruise
You will find free high speed WiFi in your cabin and throughout the ship. We never once had a WiFi issue, the service was so quick. Furthermore should you have work to keep up with or just want to keep tabs with everyone at home.
My Final Thoughts On Our AmaWaterways River Cruise?
I think we have it all covered there, River Cruising is a totally different experience to Ocean Cruising, yet is equally spectacular. It’s very difficult to compare the two as they both shine for very different reason. But for me, I have well and truly caught the river cruise bug.
