10 Things Cruise Lines Quietly Hope You Never Notice

Cruising is often marketed as a seamless, all-inclusive escape. From gourmet dining to luxurious cabins and endless entertainment, it seems like a dream vacation at sea. But there’s more beneath the surface than the brochures let on.

Here are 10 things cruise lines don’t usually shout about. Knowing them in advance will help you sail smarter, make the most of your holiday, and avoid any unexpected surprises.

1. The “All-Inclusive” Price Isn’t Truly All-Inclusive

Your fare covers so much, including lodging, main dining, and some onboard entertainment. Extras like speciality restaurants, alcohol, Wi-Fi, shore excursions, spa treatments, and even some fitness classes often come with a hefty additional cost. Budget carefully, or you might have a shock.

2. Some Ports of Call May Be Less Convenient Than You Think

Cruise lines often promote itineraries that feature famous cities, but the reality is that ships frequently dock well outside the city centre. For example, cruises to Rome actually arrive at the port of Civitavecchia, which is around 80 km (50 miles) from the city. Travellers then need to factor in extra time and cost for transfers, trains, or excursions to reach the sights.

3. The Cheapest Cabin May Be Tiny

Inside cabins can be surprisingly small, sometimes less than 150 sq ft. Storage is limited, bathrooms are compact, and noise from corridors or engine rooms can be noticeable. Understanding cabin layouts and prime locations is key to comfort. Whilst they are cleverly designed with lots of storage, don’t expect a huge cabin.

4. Wi-Fi Is Expensive

Cruise ship internet has improved in recent years, but it can still be expensive and slower than on land. Most cruise lines now offer Wi-Fi packages priced by day or for the duration of the cruise, with some including unlimited data.

Streaming and video calls are often possible, especially on ships using Starlink or similar high-speed satellite systems, but connection quality can vary depending on location and demand. It’s still a good idea to download shows, music, and other entertainment before you sail, just in case.

5. Onboard Drink Packages Are Not Worth It For Everyone

Onboard drink packages can look like a great deal, but they’re not always worth the cost for every traveller. Daily prices can be high, and to get your money’s worth you often need to drink multiple alcoholic beverages each day.

Many packages also include service charges, and both adults in a cabin may be required to purchase the same package. If you prefer the occasional drink, enjoy port days off the ship, or plan to bring allowed beverages onboard, buying drinks individually can work out cheaper.

6. Cruise Lines Have Tipping Policies

Tipping is often expected, and sometimes automatically added to your account. Some passengers aren’t aware that this can add hundreds to the total bill, especially for longer cruises. Always check tipping guidelines before you sail and factor the cost in if you dont pay upfront.

7. Ship Announcements Are Frequent

From safety drills to daily updates, cruise ships make regular announcements over the PA system to keep guests informed and ensure smooth operations. While this can occasionally be disruptive. Especially if you’re a light sleeper or sensitive to noise, choosing a cabin away from public areas, elevators, and loud venues can help minimise interruptions.

On the plus side, these announcements are a great way to stay up to date with activities, entertainment, and important information, so you won’t miss a thing happening on board.

8. Dining Times and Seating Can Be Restrictive

Opting for traditional dining times can limit your flexibility, as you’ll be assigned a set time and table each evening. While many cruise lines now offer flexible or late-night dining options, these can fill up quickly, especially on popular sailings. To get your preferred dining style and time, it’s best to book early or consider making reservations at speciality restaurants for more choice and variety.

9. Cruise Lines Track Your Spending

Your onboard account isn’t just for convenience, it’s a way for cruise lines to monitor your spending habits. Promotions, upsells, and even onboard behaviour can influence how staff approach you with offers.

10. Shore Excursions Can Be Overpriced

Cruise line excursions offer convenience, peace of mind, and guaranteed return to the ship, which is why many travellers choose them. However, they’re usually more expensive than arranging your own activities, and group sizes can be large, limiting flexibility. Booking independently, whether through local tour operators, public transport, or self-guided exploration, can often save money and allow for a more personalised experience.

That said, it’s important to research the port in advance, understand local transport options, and leave plenty of time to get back to the ship to avoid any stressful last-minute dashes.

But being informed is essential to avoid surprises. Understanding what cruise lines don’t highlight, such as hidden costs, cabin realities, and overpriced extras, lets you plan smarter, spend wisely, and enjoy your journey at sea to the fullest.
