Haunted Ships and Ghostly Legends of the Sea

Share

A recent Reddit thread sent me spiralling down a wonderfully spooky rabbit hole of paranormal stories at sea, and honestly, I wasn’t ready for what I found. What started as a light bit of late-night scrolling quickly turned into a deep dive into eerie encounters, unexplained footsteps, ghostly figures, and cabins that left guests feeling… not entirely alone. It turns out that “haunted” cruise cabins might be far more common than any of us would expect, even on today’s modern mega-ships.

Do Cruise Ships Have Ghosts

Cruise ships have long histories, thousands of guests, countless crew members, and endless stories woven into their decks, so perhaps it’s no surprise that some travellers swear they’ve experienced something otherworldly.

Whether you’re a true believer, a curious sceptic, or simply someone who enjoys a good chill-down-the-spine tale, here are some of the creepiest real stories cruisers have shared. Turn the lights down… if you dare.

The Symphony of the Seas Ghost Story That Started It All

One cruiser, experienced too, with eight sailings behind them, shared a chilling encounter onboard Symphony of the Seas.

On night one, they heard furniture shifting around the cabin. Odd, but possibly the ship’s motion. By night three, it escalated: something (or someone?) plopped down onto the cabin sofa.

Then came the unsettling part: objects moved on their own. A hat left on the bed turned up on the bathroom door handle moments later, even when the partner wasn’t in the room.

“Nope, not the drink package,” they insisted.

More Cruisers Joined In… and Things Got Spookier

As more cruisers joined the conversation, the stories became even more unsettling. What began as a handful of strange experiences quickly turned into a flood of chilling encounters, with passengers from different ships, cruise lines, and even from different decades sharing eerily similar tales.

From unexplained knocks in the dead of night to shadowy figures and sudden drops in cabin temperature, the thread took on a life of its own, and the spookiness only escalated.

1. The Queen Mary Overnight Guest

A commenter shared staying on the famously haunted Queen Mary. They weren’t into paranormal stuff, but their adventurous partner convinced them to spend the night.

She said, “Long story short, after that night, I was a huge believer in the paranormal. In the middle of the night, I would wake up and hear someone walk around the room when there was no one, and my ex was asleep next to me. I would hear incoherent whispering when there was no possible cause nearby.

2. The NCL Whispering Cabin

Another cruiser revealed they heard footsteps pacing the room, whispering with no clear source, and even saw objects move. They nearly switched cabins, but didn’t want to risk looking unhinged.

Their belief? A previous guest had passed away in that stateroom, and never left.

The Facebook Stories Were Even Wilder

When someone asked whether others had experienced paranormal activity at sea, the comments delivered:

Meet Fritz: The Unexpected Cabin Roommate

A cruiser on Explorer of the Seas said they repeatedly saw a figure pacing outside their bathroom at night. They eventually named him Fritz.

One morning, around 4:30 am, things escalated; they woke to see an older, balding man in a green shirt and tan trousers standing over their husband. Oddly enough, they weren’t frightened, just convinced the cabin had a previous occupant lingering around.

And Then There Was the Dominican Republic Resort Visitor…

One reader said it didn’t happen on a ship but in an all-inclusive hotel. She dreamt a man climbed onto her and choked her. She woke up screaming, only for her husband to admit he’d just seen a dark figure watching them.

Hotels, cruise ships… seems no place is off limits.

So… Are Cruise Ships Haunted?

Here’s the unromantic reality:

  • Cruise ships are floating cities.
  • Guests come and go, and yes, people do occasionally pass away onboard.
  • Cabins have thousands of occupants over the years.
  • Ships creak, groan, shift, and hum in ways you don’t notice during the day.

Most “ghostly encounters” probably have rational explanations.

But with so many cruisers independently describing footsteps, whispers, shadows, and objects moving… it does make you wonder.

Would I Sail on a Haunted Ship?

I would be terrified; seeing a ghost anywhere is not something I relish. But love to hear stories from others. If anything, it adds a little extra intrigue to sea days. And who doesn’t love having a spine-tingling story to tell fellow cruisers at the bar?
