From its unusual beginnings to its global reputation today, Miami has stories that many visitors never hear. Whether you’re a first-time traveller planning your trip, a cruise passenger passing through, or simply curious about the Magic City, here are some fascinating facts about Miami that will make you see the city in a whole new light.

1. Miami Was Founded by a Woman

Most major U.S. cities were founded by men, but Miami stands out as the only large city established thanks to the vision and determination of a woman: Julia Tuttle. A wealthy landowner and citrus grower in the late 1800s, she believed Miami had the potential to become a thriving city.

When a devastating freeze wiped out much of Florida’s crops in 1894–95, Julia sent fresh oranges and flowers from her Miami groves to Henry Flagler, a powerful railroad tycoon. Impressed by the climate and persuaded by Tuttle, Flagler extended his railroad to Miami, officially putting the city on the map. Without her determination, Miami as we know it might not exist, which is why she’s remembered as the “Mother of Miami.”

2. It’s the Cruise Capital of the World

Cruise lovers already know Miami plays a huge role in the industry, but its scale is truly astonishing. PortMiami welcomes more cruise passengers than any other port on Earth, earning it the title “Cruise Capital of the World.”

In recent years, the port has handled more than 8 million cruise travellers annually, breaking records and serving as the home port for major lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, and Norwegian. Its location at the gateway to the Caribbean makes it the perfect starting point for short getaways and longer voyages alike. If you’ve ever boarded a ship bound for the Bahamas or the Virgin Islands, there’s a good chance you set sail from Miami.

3. Miami Has Two National Parks on Its Doorstep

It’s rare for a major city to have easy access to one national park, but Miami has two, and they couldn’t be more different. To the west lies Everglades National Park, a sprawling subtropical wetland that is home to rare species such as manatees, panthers, and countless birds.

To the east lies Biscayne National Park, where the focus shifts to water, coral reefs, and sunken shipwrecks beneath the turquoise sea. Together, they offer a reminder that Miami isn’t just about nightlife and beaches, it’s a gateway to some of the most incredible natural environments in the United States.

4. Crocodiles and Alligators Live Side by Side

Here’s a fact that surprises many visitors: South Florida is the only place in the world where crocodiles and alligators coexist in the wild. In most parts of the world, these species live in very different climates and habitats.

But in the Everglades, thanks to the mix of fresh and saltwater, both the American alligator and the American crocodile thrive side by side. For wildlife enthusiasts, this makes the area a truly unique destination. (Don’t worry, spotting them is exciting, but safe, as long as you admire them from a distance!)

5. Miami Is an Art Deco Wonderland

Miami Beach isn’t just famous for its sandy shores, it’s also home to the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world. Walk down Ocean Drive or Collins Avenue, and you’ll be surrounded by pastel-coloured hotels, neon lights, and curved corners that feel like a step back into the 1930s.

These designs aren’t just eye-catching, they were also built to be practical, with hurricane-resistant construction. Today, Miami’s Art Deco District is a protected area, and it’s one of the most photographed parts of the city, making it a must-see for anyone with an interest in architecture or history.

6. Cuban Coffee Is the City’s Lifeblood

If New York runs on bagels and coffee, Miami runs on cafecito, strong, sweet Cuban espresso. This daily ritual is more than a drink; it’s part of the city’s cultural heartbeat.

Thanks to Miami’s Cuban community, you’ll find ventanitas (little coffee windows) scattered across the city, especially in Little Havana, where locals gather to sip, chat, and socialise. Ordering a cafecito is a quick way to experience Miami like a local, and it’s proof of how the city’s multicultural influences have shaped everyday life.

7. The Sun Shines Almost All Year Round

It’s no exaggeration to say that Miami is one of the sunniest places in the U.S. On average, the city enjoys around 248 days of sunshine each year.

That’s nearly two-thirds of the year spent in blue skies and warm weather, no wonder Miami is such a popular escape during the colder winter months. The climate here is officially tropical, meaning hot summers, mild winters, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, whether it’s lounging on South Beach or exploring the nearby Everglades.

Galleries, collectors, and artists flock to the city to showcase and discover contemporary art, while the rest of Miami transforms into a creative playground with satellite fairs, public installations, and celebrity-studded events. For one week each year, Miami becomes the epicentre of global art, drawing culture lovers from every corner of the world.

For sports fans, Miami has a proud claim to fame: the Miami Dolphins are the only NFL team ever to complete a perfect season. In 1972, the team finished the season undefeated, including the Super Bowl, a feat that has never been matched. Even decades later, the Dolphins’ achievement remains legendary, and it’s a point of pride for Miami sports enthusiasts.

Finally, the name “Miami” itself has fascinating roots. It comes from the Mayaimi people, a Native American tribe who lived around Lake Okeechobee. Their name translates to “big water,” which perfectly fits a city surrounded by ocean, rivers, and wetlands. The name has endured through centuries, giving Miami not just its identity but also a direct connection to the land’s earliest inhabitants.
