Cruise Drinks Packages And Which Are Best For You
Are Cruise Drinks Packages Worth The Money?
This is the million dollar question isn’t it? However when you work out the cost of a drinks package for a ‘day, v’s exactly what you drink’, they generally work out economical.
Although remember to consider ALL drinks not just alcoholic drinks. For example, if like me you drink sparkling water and also like regular top ups of speciality coffee, factor those in too. Count in the wine you would drink with dinner. Also consider pre dinner drinks and bar added gratuities and tax as it all add up. Check out the drinks prices and bar menus of P&O cruises here, and Royal Caribbean’s Schooner Bar Here.
You will pay tax and gratuities at the point of ordering and paying for your package. Yet this is on the price of the package, not the value of the drinks you consume.
When Is It Not Worth Getting A Drinks Package?
Yet for some it’s simply not worth it, for example if you like to take your own tea bags, cordial and top up with free drinks from the buffet restaurant and that works for you thats great. Drinks packages don’t suit everybody.
Also bear in mind there is a choice of cruise drinks packages for kids and teens, who in my experience always make full use of a drinks package.
Check out this Celebrity Cruises drinks menu and consider that the classic drinks package currently costs $59 per day per person.
Which Cruise Lines Offer Free Cruise Drinks Packages?
This changes frequently, look out for special offers and promotions with individual cruise lines. Also keep checking as free drinks packages or indeed reduced rate cruise drinks packages become available frequently.
Cruise lines who consistently offer free drinks packages are;
Marella offer all inclusive cruises.
River Cruises often include drinks with meals and snacks plus free afternoon cocktails and pre dinner drinks. Check out what I thought of River Cruising and also find out whats included on an Ama Waterways River Cruise.
Booking a suite on many cruise lines enables you to access a select lounge where drinks are often free. Check out Donna’s post on Royal Caribbeans Suite Class and whats included.
Can You Share A Drinks Package?
No you can’t share a drink package. Drinks packages are intended for the user only. Additionally you will find on many cruise lines you have to buy a package for every cruiser in the cabin.
What Types Of Packages Are Available?
Classic Drinks Package
The classic package is very often dismissed as an inferior package. Yes, the choice of drinks is most certainly less than the premium packages. However if you enjoy wine, beers and a selection of cocktails these work out the best value.
Premium Drinks Package
Premium packages offer a more premium selection. Such as a wider choice of wines and spirit, if you enjoy spirits then this would possibly be the best package for you.
Non Alcoholic Packages
Not everybody wants to drink alcohol and these non alcoholic packages offer a variety of levels, some including speciality water, speciality coffee and soft drinks, smoothies and mocktails.
The non alcoholic packages are also great for kiddies who don’t enjoy fizzy drinks.
Wine packages are designed solely for use in the dining room the wine packages allow you to preselect your wine for dinner before you sail. These work our better value if you have not already booked a drinks package. Check out more about the Celebrity Wine Package Here.
The soda package is perfect for children and teens, some cruise lines restrict these to fizzy drinks whilst some cruise lines such as Princess Cruises consider that families need a little more variety and offer all fountain sodas, fruit juices, mocktails and smoothies for $9.99 per day.
Is There A Limit To What You Can Drink On Your Package?
Some cruise lines do have limits. For example alcoholic drinks on Princess Cruises are limited to 15 beverages per 24-hour period. Where on Celebrity there is no limit, instead it is at the discretion of the bar staff. But 15 alcoholic drinks is A LOT so does not feel to restrictive.
Hope that has been helpful, I have spent hours researching drinks packages in the past. But if you get it right it can make your cruise so much easier and you know you will not have a large bar bill at the end of your trip.
