In historic downtown Puerto Plata, there’s a small, joyful lane awash in every shade of pink, known as Paseo de Doña Blanca, or The Pink Street, and it’s impossible not to smile the moment you step onto it.

This vibrant corner of the city celebrates creativity, colour, and the lasting legacy of a remarkable woman, Bianca “Doña Blanca” Franceschini, whose vision and resilience continue to inspire. When we visited, we quickly realised this was more than a photogenic spot; it’s a symbol of the strength of one woman in the heart of the Caribbean.

Recognising the need for traveller accommodation in Puerto Plata, Italian immigrants Bianca “Doña Blanca” Franceschini and her husband, Isidoro Rainieri, opened a guesthouse called Hospedaje del Comercio, later renamed Hotel Europa.

After her husband’s death in the early 1910s, Doña Blanca continued to run the hotel while raising their large family. She became a respected figure in the community and played an important role in the early development of Puerto Plata’s tourism industry, their hotel helped lay the foundations for the region’s hospitality sector.

When she passed away in 1946, the city honoured her legacy by naming the charming pink-painted alley connecting Beller Street and John F. Kennedy Street Paseo Doña Blanca. T

Today, the colourful pedestrian alley, officially called Paseo de Doña Blanca, celebrates her legacy while providing one of Puerto Plata’s most Instagram-worthy corners. Walking through it, you can sense the care and charm poured into every detail. The walls, doors, and benches are all painted in vibrant shades of pink, from soft blush to deep fuchsia, creating a cheerful, immersive atmosphere and a subtle tribute to a woman who shaped her community.

You’ll find Paseo de Doña Blanca in the historic centre of Puerto Plata, connecting Calle Beller and Calle John F. Kennedy. The alley is pedestrian-only, making it easy and safe to explore, and it’s free to visit. We arrived mid-morning, when the light was perfect for photos and the street was still relatively quiet. It’s small enough to explore in about 15 minutes, but we lingered, enjoying the details and imagining the history of the city around us. Taking a tour of the area is a great option.
