Being safe and aware in port is essential, and with only a few tips, a port day can be a much more enjoyable experience. Today, we are looking at potential issues to be aware of when getting off a cruise ship to explore a port, and how to mitigate them.

1. Getting Lost

Carry a map, use a GPS app, and stick to well-marked tourist areas. Plan your route in advance and keep the cruise line’s contact information handy, there is always an emergency contact on the daily news so take it with you.

It’s also wise to have a small portable charger for your phone to ensure your GPS app is always accessible. Familiarise yourself with key landmarks near the port to help navigate back if needed.

2. Theft and Scams

Pickpocketing and bag snatching whilst not common does happen more than you think. Keep valuables secure in a money belt or hidden pouch. Be cautious of overly friendly strangers and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use anti-theft bags with slash-resistant straps and lockable zips. Be wary of distractions like “accidental” spills or bumps, or asking if you have dropped your wallet, as these are common tactics used by thieves.

3. Missing the Ship

Always keep track of the ship’s departure time. Set multiple alarms and plan to return well in advance. Use the cruise line’s excursions, which typically guarantee your return. Make sure to sync your watch with the ship’s time, as local times may vary. Have the port agent’s contact information and a list of local transport options as a backup.

4. Health Issues

Food poisoning and dehydration are common. Drink bottled water, eat at reputable places, carry necessary medications, and have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. Pack a basic first aid kit with essentials like plasters, antiseptics, and over-the-counter medications. Know the location of local hospitals or clinics in case of an emergency.

5. Language Barriers

Difficulty communicating with locals or understanding signs. Learn basic phrases in the local language, use translation apps, and carry a language guidebook. Having a business card from your hotel or the port can help you get back if you get lost. Download offline translation apps like Google Translate to assist when internet access is unavailable.

Issues with local transport such as unreliable taxis, getting overcharged. To mitigate this, use recommended transport services, agree on fares in advance, and wear seatbelts. Popular tourist areas can be overcrowded, leading to long waits and increased risk of theft. Visit less crowded sites, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and stay aware of your surroundings. Plan visits during off-peak times and explore alternative attractions to avoid large crowds. Keep a secure grip on your belongings and be mindful of pickpockets in crowded areas.
