Cruising with Kids is a great way to see the world as a family. Ok, there’s lots to think of when you’re packing for your cruise. Choosing the right ship is vital; you don’t want overwhelmed or bored kids. There is a balance, and it’s all about getting that balance right for your family. One size does not fit all.

You also want to consider the size of the ship, as the Mariner of the Seas is an older ship. Currently 21 years old, she is a lot smaller than the newer, bigger ships. Some want the bigger ships, but for families with potty-trained kids ( There is no splash pool on Mariner of the Seas) a smaller ship that still has a lot of the activities might be just what you need for your family.
1. The Sports Deck
The sports deck on Mariner of the Seas is fabulous for families; we spent so much time here, not only participating in the activities but also finding somewhere quieter to sit away from the pool. This is a great spot for families to chill or participate in activities. Also, top tip: Head to the aft of the ship for sailaway. The view is great and much quieter.
2. Crazy Golf on Mariner of the Seas
At the aft of the ship, you will find the Royal Dunes; this is a great place to go on a hot day at sea as there is always a breeze. There are tables so you can take breaks in the shade between games. No matter how old you are, you are never too old for crazy golf.
3. The Flowrider
The Flowrider is a great addition to most of the Royal Caribbean Fleet; we love to ride it every time we cruise. The great thing is it’s free of charge, you can pay for extra lessons but the free style sessions are free. There is a viewing area so the whole family can be involved and support eachother.
4. There Is a Full Sports Court
Our boys are sports mad and this is where they can be found a lot of the time. The indoor courts are great on the Quantum Class Ships, but you can’t beat an outdoor sports court and there is a full programme of sporting activities to take part in. Or head there with the kids for a kickaround.
5. Water Slides On Mariner of the Seas
This is what we loved about Mariner of the Seas: despite being a 21-year-old ship, she still had many of the features of the newer ships but with fewer crowds. This alone would influence me to book an older ship that has been renovated again. There was never a long queue for the slides plus there are lounger nearby so parents can chill with a book as they watch the kiddies having fun on the slides.
6. The Main Pool on Mariner of the Seas
The pool was a great area but was always super busy, apart from on a port day, with sunbeds reserved from very early. The solarium pool was very much the same. I have to say; for this reason alone, I prefer to avoid the pool and loud music and opt for somewhere quiet aft of the ship. But head there with the kiddies on a port day and you will almost have it to yourself.
Water Vests Are Supplied For Little Ones
There is no splash zone on the Mariner of the Seas for non-potty-trained children. However, children who are potty-trained can use the pool, and lifejackets are provided.
7. The Kiddies Play Area
If you are travelling with younger children, the play area at the back of the ship is a great area to play and cool down in the breeze.
