One size doesn’t fit all; we have sailed on cruise lines we didn’t enjoy or wasn’t a good fit for our family. Some cruise lines do not cater for families in the same way; whilst children are welcome, they may not be able to access certain areas or even the pool, so it is essential to do your homework.

1. What Facilities Suit the Age of Your Children?

Different ships cater to various age groups, and not every cruise line has the same facilities or programs for children. Consider what your kids will enjoy most, from toddlers who need play areas to older kids who may love more active zones with climbing walls or arcades. Checking out the ship’s offerings for each age group will help you find a cruise with something for everyone.

2. Does the Ship Offer Kids and Baby Clubs?

Not all ships have nurseries, and some only provide kids’ clubs for certain age ranges. Look for kids’ clubs that match your children’s ages to ensure they’ll have a great time with age-appropriate activities and entertainment. Some cruises also offer babysitting services, allowing you to enjoy some time to yourselves.

3. Does the Ship Have a Baby Splash Pool?

If you’re travelling with a baby, check if the ship has a splash pool designed specifically for little ones. Most cruise pools have age restrictions, and a dedicated splash pool will give your baby a safe, enjoyable place to cool off and play. Ships without splash zones will not allow babies in the pool if they are not potty trained.

4. What Size of Ship Would You Prefer to Sail On?

Some families love the excitement and variety of large ships, while others prefer a more intimate, less crowded atmosphere. Decide if a massive, bustling ship suits your family, or if a mid-size or smaller vessel might offer a more relaxed experience. Larger ships often have more amenities and activities, while smaller ones can provide easier access and a quieter environment.

5. Are Waterslides a Priority for You and Your Family?

If your family loves waterslides, this feature is a must-have. Check out ships with exciting water parks, slides, and splash zones for children of all ages. Waterslides can be an endless source of fun on sea days, so if this is a key factor for your family, prioritise ships with water parks.

6. Which Ship Has the Best Sports Facilities?

Many cruise ships feature impressive sports facilities, like basketball courts, rock climbing walls, mini-golf courses, and even surf simulators. If your family enjoys staying active, consider a ship that offers a range of sports and fitness options to keep everyone engaged. If this is the case, Royal Caribbean offer amazing sports facilities for active families.

7. Do You Enjoy Specialty Dining? Which Ships Offer Your Favourite Options?

For families who appreciate unique dining experiences, speciality restaurants can be a highlight of the cruise. Research which ships offer speciality dining that appeals to you, whether it’s fine dining, themed restaurants, or unique cuisines. Some ships even offer kid-friendly speciality dining that makes eating out an experience for everyone.

8. Are You a Theatre Lover? Which Shows Are Playing on Different Ships?

Many cruise lines feature top-quality theatre productions and Broadway-style shows. If you love a good musical or theatrical performance, look up which shows are available on each ship to help make your decision. Some ships even offer exclusive shows and performances you won’t find anywhere else!

9. How Far Do You Want To Fly

Depending on where you live, if you don’t want to fly far, start by finding your nearest home port. Next, pinpoint the ships available sailing from that port and narrow down the ships that meet your requirements by answering the questions above. It’s essential to find the right cruise line that fits your family. You may want a family friendly cruise line that has less kids onboard. Or if you have a toddler a splash pool is a must.

10. What Is Your Budget

This will determine the cruise line and ship you are able to sail on. However, there are ways to get your cruise line and ship of choice by sailing out of season and in term time. This all depends on local school holidays and bonus holidays in term time that some schools offer. Also look for cruise lines who offer free kids places, although these sell out quick to you need to book early.
