Marin Držić was a renowned writer often referred to as “Dubrovnik’s Shakespeare.” It’s unclear how accurate this comparison is, but it speaks to his significant influence in literature. There is a statue of Držić in Dubrovnik, known for its shiny nose, which visitors rub for good luck. It’s believed that this gesture brings the person back to Dubrovnik in the future, although no specific literature supports this claim. It’s akin to the tradition at Rome’s Trevi Fountain, where throwing a coin over your left shoulder is said to ensure a return to the city.
