Today we’ll delve into the biggest gripes that travellers sometimes have while cruising. Shedding light on these common frustrations, join us as we explore the highs and lows of cruise ship travel.

Crowded Spaces

Passengers often cite overcrowded areas, especially during peak times and sea days at buffets, poolside, or in entertainment venues, as a major frustration. To avoid this find a quiet area on the ship, there are always lots of places to take refuge away from the crowds.

Additional Fees

Unexpected charges for speciality dining, excursions, or onboard activities can lead to dissatisfaction among cruisers who expected an all-inclusive experience. When booking a cruise factor in there are nearly always additional charges, and make sure you budget for them.

Poor Service

Complaints about inconsistent service quality, from slow dining service to unresponsive cabin attendants, can detract from the overall cruise experience. We experienced this on our last short cruise. It was the first time in 18 years of cruising we have experienced this, but it is off-putting. Choosing your cruise line wisely and based on recommendation of those you trust should help combat this.

Noise Levels

Noise from neighbouring cabins, late-night parties, or ongoing maintenance work can disrupt sleep and relaxation, causing annoyance among passengers. This can be avoided by choosing your cabin wisely, don’t choose a cabin above or below public areas or near lifts. Also look for voids on the ship deck plan, this is more than likely a service area so avoid cabins next too, above and below those.

Sea Sickness

Motion sickness or discomfort from rough seas can significantly impact enjoyment, especially for first-time cruisers or those sensitive to sea conditions. To try to avoid this look for medication to take and have ready, guest services on ships also have a supply if you are caught short.

You can avoid some rough sea conditions by choosing the location of your sailing, whilst this is not fail proof, avoiding areas such as the Bay of Biscay and sailing out or Caribbean and Spanish and Italian ports can help. Plus choose the location of your cabin wisely, cabins lower down, mid ship feel less. movement.

Dining Issues

Issues such as long wait times for meals, restricted dining hours, or dissatisfaction with food quality and variety can lead to disappointment. Look in facebook threads before booking a cruise to check if there are any reported dining issues.

On a recent cruise we were given an 8.30 dining time, we asked to change they said no. This will effect any booking decisions in the future as I know my favourite brands accomodate customer requests. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises offer any time dining with great food and that is what we would expect from a holiday we paid for.

Shore Excursion Problems

Complaints may arise from canceled or poorly organised shore excursions, missed port calls, or inadequate time at destinations. Consider itineraries with easy to reach and navigate ports, do lots of research before booking to have an idea. But all be mindful, cruise lines sometimes do have to cancel ports, this happens often and its part of the cruise contract.

Cabin Concerns

Problems with cabin cleanliness, maintenance issues, or discomfort with room size and amenities can be a sources of complaint. Fortunately this is not an issue we have had. However, choose your cabin carefully, if you feel your family may be crowded then book adjoining cabins and have a little more space.

Its All About Communication

While cruises offer many opportunities for relaxation and exploration, understanding and addressing common complaints is essential to manage expectations. From crowded spaces and improving service quality to transparent communication about fees and activities, cruise lines can mitigate many of the grievances passengers encounter.

Equally important is for travellers to prepare adequately, and communicate concerns promptly to onboard staff. By navigating these challenges effectively, both cruise lines and passengers can ensure smoother sailing and unforgettable journeys.
